I proved it to ipswitch you will notice the mail stops being delivered about ever 2.5 days. You figure this by doing the following math there are 1440 minutes in a day. By default win2k uses flom port 1025 to 5000 by default for outbound client connections. There is a reg setting to open up the max number of out bound ports. Any way this gives you 3976 ports for outbound connections. Now imonitor monitoring the www service will hold 1 outbound port per minute. ( the default setting is to check the service every 60seconds. This will allow your server to make outbound connections for 2.76 days.

Since you made the change do a netstat you will notice that there are verrrrrrrry few ports in a WAIT_??? stait.

Glad to help.

Remember to stop and restart the minitor service after unchecking the WWW monitor.

Kevin.. if this solves our problem I will owe you a big one! :)

That service is running and I just unchecked it.  Now I will wait and see ..

When I called IPSwitch I told them that this is peculiar and why is it that every day or so the system returns error.. if it was a hardware problem it can't be so predictable.. it is sort of like a bucket that fills up and then spills.. but I was told it is our DNS .. I basically ignored it and hung up.. we have 10 servers that are fine..only this one and they say it is our DNS.. go figure!

I will keep the list posted.

Kami

Kami,

If you are having hte problem about every two days you may want to look at The imail Monitor service. Turn off onitoring of the WWW service and your problem should go away. The Monitor service has an issue not letting go of the outgoing TCP port.

If you look at your Imail server and run a netstat you will see many outgoing ports in a "wait" state. If this is the case the you need to definatly stop the minitor service from monitoring the WWW service. I went arround and arround with IPSwitch and they blamed it on our NIC our NIC drivers our DNS our Router our hub. I finaly figured out what it was by a process of elimination of turning off one service at a time.

When I let IpSwitch know the problem they told me they new about it and were working on a fix. I guess it still is not fixed.

We are running 8.03 and win2k

Hi Paul:

We have the same issue.. but when we reboot all goes well for 2 days and then it happens again.

Our problem is also that the mail does not go out.. when this happens the server can not resolve any name.  Our other servers have no problem .. the only one that has issue is the one running IMail.

Contacted IPSwitch about it:  Response.. "we are not aware of this issue & have not heard of this".. I think they don't watch this list.. since it has been a topic of discussion more than a hundred times.

We have done several suggestions on the list with no resolution.

For now-- reboot every other day.

Kami

Search the archives for problems noted with Imail DNS tests and Windows 2003 server.

Subject: [IMail Forum] DNS Blacklist failure

I’ve seen a couple of posts in the mail archive about this subject, but I haven’t seen a resolution to it yet.

I am running Imail Express 8.04 on a Windows 2003 server. When I attempt to use DNS Blacklists I get the following error.

BLACKLIST: failed to connect to service (SpamCop:*.bl.spamcop.net)

This error is returned 99 times out of a hundred, with it only successfully contacting the service 1 time out of the 100.

I have changed the “Server” input from “*” to my local DNS server, to my ISP’s DNS server, but still have the same result. If I do a nslookup 2.0.0.127.bl.spamcop.net from a DOS prompt on the hosting machine it returns the proper response of 127.0.0.2.  So I know my DNS is functioning properly.

Has anyone found a fix for this problem?

Thanks,

Paul Ellison
