FWIW We have turned off the monitoring a long time ago.. 2 years?.. although
I'm sure our traffic is very light compared to most.. it did seem to help.

No, that doesn't matter. The IMail Monitor service makes 1 TCP connection every 60 seconds (using the default settings), so it does not matter whether you have light traffic or heavy traffic (the number of connections made by IMail Monitor is the same either way).
