On Saturday we migrated our e-mail server to a new box. A few times a day the server refuses connections. I am able to logon to the box but can't ping any other servers (internally or externally).
Are you using the IMail Monitor service? If so, you should disable it -- it has often been known to produce this problem (every X hours/days no more Internet connections can be made, depending on how many Internet servers you monitor and how frequently). If the problem is occurring at standard intervals (every 8 hours, for example), this is probably the problem.
If it is random, though, that would be much more complicated. Changing the NIC card would be the first step, as gigabyte NICs occasionally seem to have problems with IMail.
But, not being able to ping other servers sounds more like a resource issue (software), so I'm suspecting IMail Monitor (or possibly something else -- are there any other programs on the server that use network connections?) is doing it.
