E-Mail is NOT instant messaging. The standard for e-mail delivery is still about 3 hours - NOT instant.
That's not a "standard" I've experienced, happily.
I see delivery from Imail/IMGate outbound to 1000's of MXs averaging under 10 secs, over many 10's of 1000's of msgs over many IMGates I admin at different ISPs.
I have seen delays of mail delivered to yahoo MXs taking a couple hours to arrive in the yahoo mailbox, but that is exceptional, probably for yahoo, and certainly for most big ISPs. Such a mail system is essentially so overwhelmed as to be broken.
