As much as I'd wish our ISP would police their own mail server at least as well as we police ours, I can't make them. The boss is scared that not having a backup means he'll lose email, although I agree, we haven't needed it yet.
Be aware, though, that this can backfire on you. We used to have a backup mailserver through our Internet provider -- only to find that E-mails to us started bouncing because their settings were extremely strict. So it could well be that you lose more E-mail by having a backup mailserver than not having one. By not having a backup mailserver, you're almost guaranteed that the sender will receive a bounce message if their mailserver can't handle the necessary retries. But having a backup mailserver that you do not have control over can cause the E-mails to just disappear.
