I don't understand why John's message was unaffected by CMDSPACE, while my test messages (both in-office and from my home), using the same exact version of OE, failed the test. The only other difference that I can see is that our messages were internal to our server, whereas John's message (and the others) came from outside.
That is exactly why. If anyone sending E-mail with Outlook caused the CMDSPACE test to fail, it would be a useless test, since so many people are using Outlook (I wouldn't be surprised if Outlook accounts for about 50% of all E-mail).
The key here is that Outlook doesn't connect to your server, a mailserver does (except for E-mail from your users). So if I was running Outlook, Outlook would do the odd thing that it does when connecting to the mailserver here, but then when our mailserver sends the E-mail to you, the E-mail won't fail the test, since our mailserver doesn't have this problem.
The confusion arises since an MTA (IMail) can accept SMTP connections from both other MTAs (for incoming E-mail) or MUAs (E-mails from users, normally relayed to other MTAs, but can go to a local user). MTA to MTA transactions very rarely fail the CMDSPACE test; it's the MUA to MTA transactions that may fail when Outlook is involved (but for people with IMail v8, can easily be solved by using WHITELIST AUTH).
