It's  not  how  it's  responding,  it's  how it's announcing itself to
remote servers.

No,  IMail uses its own settings. And the virtual host's official host
name  will  be  that host's HELO. You just need to make sure that that
hostname  actually  exists on the public Internet to take care of that
issue. But that may not be the only issue here.
