POP users typically empty their boxes at each mailbox access ("leave mail on
server" unchecked), so they store their messages locally (not on the
server).

But webmail and esp IMAP users are encouraged by the mailbox access method
to use the mailbox server as a mailbox ARCHIVE server, with the implicit
expectation that the mailbox administrator is (expensively) guaranteeing,
via constant backups, the archive-term data reliability.

So aren't there two answers to "how big is enough"?

We make it a point to all users that we do not backup messages on the mail
server. There is no way to accurately backup POP boxes, and we have no way
of automatically knowing/configuring who has setup as an IMAP. Message
archiving is the customer's responsibility.

If the Customer wants to co-lo a server here for there mail, and have all
accounts set as IMAP, then we can easily arrange a backup option for them.
