"Symantec" doesn't scan per message.
"NAVIEG" (Norton AntiVirus for Internet Gateways, or something like that, a
Symantec product) scans per message. "IMail AntiVirus" (also a
Symantec-based product) scans per message. But the plain old
non-mailserver version of Symantec (usually called just "Norton AntiVirus")
is bad (may detect some viruses, but when it does, may delete an entire
.mbx file of mostly good E-mail).
So it all depends on which version of Symantec you have. Since you say it
scans per message, you almost certainly have a mailserver AV version of
Symantec; but for the benefit of those that read you post that have the
standard version of Symantec, it's important that this is clarified (so
they won't be surprised when their good E-mail is deleted).
