Fortunately we have found a way to ward off these distributed dictionary attacks for a very modest investment (an old Pentium and several hours of my time).
So if you bought Imail the solution is: Buy Declude Buy a second server hardware Install IMGate on it

That's where we arrived. Whether I'd do it like that from the beginning is quite another. Some systems are planned, some evolve, some grow an extra pair of legs :-)
