One may envision files that are crypto and those that are clear. This is common in secure systems. However the entire filesystem hierarchy and code that supports it is typically quite customized to that purpose.


Over on the OLPC (one laptop per child) lists there's some discussion of how to do atomic updates of their machines; they're all linux machines, so no ZFS there due to license and memory constraints, but it may be instructive for folks contemplating these issues to share brain-cycles with the OLPC developers working on those subsystems.
