Is LiveUpgrade even necessary with ZFS? Or does LiveUpgrade simply
change implementation to operate on a ZFS clone rather than a copy
partition?

I can see the advantage of preserving the LiveUpgrade command set
for the people who are familiar with it. I.e., it continues to be
the way you manually manage multiple boot environments on Solaris.

I think the main advantage live upgrade provides that the typical
Linux upgrade mechanism does not is a relatively easy to manage
distribution upgrade mechanism that leaves me "feeling safe." about
doing upgrades. It allows an admin to stage a new environment and
configure it before "throwing the switch" and allows them to "switch
back quickly" if the new environment proves unstable.

Then again, coming from Linux, most people are going to
expect to be able to upgrade without requiring a reboot. So, I'd

My Ubuntu installation has told me more than a few times than "some
updates will not be available until the system is restarted" or
something like that. So, I think that its a matter of what type of
upgrade you're talking about in regards to Linux (Ubuntu in this
case):

* If I do a "dist-upgrade" on Ubuntu, I expect a reboot since this
almost always brings a new kernel / drivers.

* If I'm just getting application updates, I don't expect a reboot,
but I may have to log out and log back in of my graphical environment.

* If I'm getting driver / kernel updates, I expect a reboot.
