I can't speak for engineering, but I think it's good that it's a 'known
variable' - it's been tested, and known to work. There may be some additional
slimming that could be done for sure, but I'm well out of my territory on that 
one.

I've spent a lot of time building minimized (but still pretty functional)
systems, and it usually came it at about the 200meg range. Yes, you
can slim, but you have to do an awful lot of work to save another 10%,
and that usually involved some system-specific tweaks. I don't actually
think that any of the current clusters are necessarily perfect as is, and
you would probably end up with something between SUNWCrnet and
SUNWCreq. Add a bit here, take a bit there. I would prefer to see it
kept simple and not try to potimize it too much.

Then you start to add layers on top. I would be far more worried about
getting the dependencies for Caiman right, given that it's gnome-based.
(And if you're not careful, that can pull in a *lot*.)
