I can't speak for engineering, but I think it's good that it's a 'known
variable' - it's been tested, and known to work. There may be some additional
slimming that could be done for sure, but I'm well out of my territory on that
one.

I suppose we should be grateful that it's only 195MiB...

The unfortunate part will be the X/Gtk graphical related clusters:

72,996,454 | SUNWCxorgserver | X server based on the X.Org Foundation
open source release
35,744,920 | SUNWCxwrte | Packages needed to run X Window System software
16,650,762 | SUNWCxmft | X Window System Minimum Required Fonts for
Multibyte Locales - CJK
934,121 | SUNWCxorglibs | X client libraries based on the X.Org
Foundation open source release
5,256,361 | SUNWCfontlibs | Software for managing and rendering fonts
22,497,990 | SUNWCfs | Font Server and Optional Fonts
1,240,776 | SUNWCGtk | GTK - The GIMP Toolkit

I wonder how much of that is actually needed for the graphical installer...
