I would say that "source based" packaging systems have advantages and disadvantages. One of the key advantages in my view, is that these packages can support a much larger variety of underlying processor and operating system architectures. This means that members from multiple communities can combine their resources and leverage eeach others workers, so that more packages can be supported across more platforms. One of the disadvantages of source based packaging is the time it takes for pakages to install, as compilation is required. Today we have seen hybrid systems that combine the flexibility of source based packaging repositories, with the speed of binary distribution. Those architectures/platforms that have the most widespread deployment, will see binary packages created to correspond with the source packages. One thing I see Indiana doing that I am not so happy about is the lack of leveraging existing packaging repositories and technologies, such that more can be done with less manpower. Anyway, that discussion was decided by Indiana's team before it ever left Sun's firewalls. (Some internal business reasons that I am not aware of)... -Brian > > This message posted from opensolaris.org > > _______________________________________________ > indiana-discuss mailing list > [email protected] > http://mail.opensolaris.org/mailman/listinfo/indiana-discuss > -- - Brian Gupta http://opensolaris.org/os/project/nycosug/ _______________________________________________ indiana-discuss mailing list [email protected] http://mail.opensolaris.org/mailman/listinfo/indiana-discuss
