Simon, did you miss the whole controversy about IPS not being designed
and created in the open? It seems everything about this project is
trying to circumvent the community processes and ARC.

These responses you give invite nothing but antipathy. It seems, you
are either unaware of the facts, or are deliberately
mis-characterizing the facts.

As you work for Sun, you can talk to Stephen Hahn yourself, and he
will be more likely to share the business reasons (IE: Non-technical)
that he chose not to use a preexisting source based
packaging/repository system, and decided to design a binary only
packaging system (IPS). (Which is completely different than the
"installer")

Despite bringing this up on numerous occasions these non-technical
reasons have yet to be shared.

Also, when I try to answer a question as factually as is possible
please do not throw fuel on the fire. State facts, and verify that we
are talking about the same thing. A newcomer to the community made
some suggestions, and someone questioned the wisdom of that person's
suggestions.

Since I understand some of the issues, as we have experimented with
many packaging systems over the years, I responded with technical
pros/cons of using a source based packaging system. I also responded
with a small sentence about the backstory.

Cheers,
Brian

P.S. - It is quite possible, and I'd LIKE to think likely, that my
concerns are overblown. However they could easily have been dissipated
with better communication. (And still can be).
P.S.S. - If you look past the decision to use a binary only packaging
system, there are many things to like about IPS, and I think it will
go on to be one of the key selling points behind Indiana.
