the problem is the size of the space needed to have a successful upgrade:
$ df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
rpool/ROOT/opensolaris-nv
                       16G   12G  3.8G  76% /

ok, i have 3.8G free, but:
$ pfexec pkg image-update
DOWNLOAD                                    PKGS       FILES     XFER (MB)
Completed                                732/732 45152/45152 1254.94/1254.94

PHASE                                        ACTIONS
Removal Phase                            11105/11105
Install Phase                            14168/14168
Update Phase 52473/56021 Action upgrade failed for 'opt/SunStudioExpress/prod/lib/sse2/libsunperf.a' (pkg:/sunstudioexpress):
 IOError: [Errno 28] No space left on device

pkg: An unexpected error happened during image-update: [Errno 28] No space left on device: '/tmp/tmpUol8wx/var/pkg/history/20090428T113034Z-01.xml' pkg: An error was encountered while attempting to store information about the
current operation in client history.
pkg: [Errno 28] No space left on device: '/tmp/tmpUol8wx/var/pkg/history/20090428T113034Z-01.xml'

how do you explain that 3.8G isn't sufficient? What is the minimal size of free space needed?
