The packages by itself (from your output above) took about 1.2 GB.
This is what a "df" on my system looks like (snv_111a) with
compression enabled (which gives 1.42x compress ratio).

# df -h /
Filesystem            Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
rpool/ROOT/opensolaris-7
                       86G  4.9G   82G   6% /


So if we assume that you're using an old version (the original
2008.11), and that most packages have changed, and you don't enable
compression, you'd need about (4.9*1.42 + 1.2) which is over 8 GB.
This is just a rough assumption though :)
