the problem is the size of the space needed to have a successful upgrade:
$ df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
rpool/ROOT/opensolaris-nv
                       16G   12G  3.8G  76% /

ok, i have 3.8G free, but:
$ pfexec pkg image-update
DOWNLOAD                                    PKGS       FILES     XFER (MB)
Completed 732/732 45152/45152 1254.94/1254.94
...
how do you explain that 3.8G isn't sufficient? What is the minimal size of free space needed?

The size listed above is the *compressed* download size. As such, once the files are decompressed, that number could significantly increase leaving you with not enough space to complete the operation.

Unfortunately, pkg(5) doesn't yet check available space, it is a known issue that we hope to resolve in the near future.
