EMS-Related Research Poised for Significant Advancement
The amount and quality of research into therapies and treatments for prehospital care is likely to improve significantly thanks to a collaborative, long-term project undertaken by EMS systems and hospitals in the United States and Canada. The Resuscitation Outcomes Consortium (ROC) will conduct scientific and clinical research on prehospital emergency care specifically related to the treatment of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and traumatic injury.
Interfacility Transport "Best Practices" Sought
Patient transfer between facilities or between a facility and a specialty care resource is increasingly common, yet minimal guidance exists for any agency trying to deal with all the issues involved. In the process of creating a consensus document NHTSA is seeking to identify "Best Practices" in interfacility transport.
Accurate Dosing of Defibrillation in Kids Important
In Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and similar courses, we are taught that the correct energy dose is 2 to 4 Joules/kg. Most defibrillators will not allow for accurate dosing for pediatric patients, and AEDs provide only adult shocks.
Can You Really Trust Your Rescuer Intuition?
Even the fire chief assured her the wires were dead. But something-an intuition, a sixth sense, some sort of inexplicable feeling-prevented the EMT from walking to the car.
Emergency Organizations Announce NEARS Initiative
National organizations representing every facet of emergency response have announced the launch of the National Emergency Alerting and Response Systems (NEARS) Initiative, a nonprofit, cooperative effort to demonstrate an effective approach for interagency messaging.
CPR or Defibrillation: Which Comes First?
Several studies have shown that providing 1 to 2 minutes of CPR before defibrillation increases the effectiveness of the defibrillation and thus survival. In a San Diego study, researchers looked at non-traumatic cardiac arrests prospectively over an 18-month period.
Nashville Hospital Saves Lives as Congregations Save Souls
Saint Thomas Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee, recently undertook a program to provide local places of worship with automated external defibrillators to provide additional emergency support in case of a cardiac arrest among worshippers.
