Although I don't directly support the machines we do the same at the agency
with Windows. Politically because it allows us to keep a handle on software
licenses. Technically because it keeps the number of support calls down due to
"After Dark" (Old screen saver if you are new in the biz) or other problem
software.

I do recommend that all districts do this. The district is liable for all
software installed on a system they own even if the school did not know about
it. It is not uncommon for a "Friend" to loan a disk of a licensed program to
someone and then this unlicensed software gets on school/agency equipment.
Then all it takes is a disgruntled staff member to call the software piracy
line and the school/agency could be open to some large fines.

It is not popular with staff, but by locking down systems it will keep your
liabilities to a minimum.

Our teachers are not local admins on their machines, and cannot install
programs. They can run any program installed, and if they need a program
installed, and there's no good reason not to give it to them, I'll install it
for them. They are subject to some web filtering, but not nearly as strict as
the students' laptops are subject to.

Subject: [info-tech] Teacher lock-down

As I'm getting ready for the 2009-2010 school year I need a little help from
you guys again. What I'm looking for is a list of what privileges you give
your teachers. As for what they can and can't do on their systems. I'm
looking to lock them down pretty tight but I have to have other schools input
before I can do this. So if your teachers are locked down please let me know
what they can do as for running programs, installing programs, and then some.

Thanks
