I think I have to vote for Skype here.  We've used it for a number of
things, and I like that it's simple, familiar and cross-platform.  The
latest version of Skype does screen sharing.

Skype would be a definite possibility. I know that some folks have  
some issues with the security and Skype's desire to use all your  
bandwidth, but it should be great for this.  Another option would be  
to send a MacBOok with the kid and have him use iChat. Using iChat  
would allow for desktop and document sharing. If you want to try Skype  
I know that there are a few of us that can help you test it out.
