Clare,

I don't want to assume I understand your point, so let me ask for some
clarification. Are you saying:

God exists, but life is the way you have described, therefore God is not loving?

Or

Life is the way you have described above, therefore God does not exist?

Or

Life is not the way you described above, God exists, but is something different?

None of the above :-) I wasn't really describing life at all - I was simply saying that I don't believe a fundamentalist concept of god is consistent with my (and many others') experience of life, so for Hull or Gully to refute evolution on the basis of a claim that an evolutionary theology doesn't answer questions of pain and justice is ignoring the fact that a creationary theology doesn't either.

In short, what I'm looking for is a theology that can cope with the seemingly
contradictory claims of theology and science.

Why? That is, why does it have to be so cut and dried? Maybe there *are* no answers. And even if there are, how necessary is it that we know them?

You can treat those as rhetorical questions if you like - I'm not out to challenge you, I simply question how necessary it is to find answers. Because finding answers, in my view, is edging perilously close to limiting god to the box we construct for him/her/it. Isn't the whole point about a limitless god the very fact that we *can't* know?
