Why? That is, why does it have to be so cut and dried? Maybe there

If you teach an OC SRE class every week, it gets real important! Especially when the class teacher chips in and says he wants to know the answer too! 8-(

Seriously, I have tried the line, "You're going to have to wrestle with these
questions for the rest of your lives, so the best we can do now is learn to
frame the questions." However, sometimes it wears a bit thin.

I was an OC'er myself once, and I understand the extra challenges that a class of that type can pose, but I'd say that makes it even *more* important not to offer answers if they're going to be found to have holes in them. Because these are the kids who *will* find the holes. If not now, perhaps in two or three years time. And at that point their likelihood of believing will diminish with great rapidity if that's the only option they've been given.

But I think there are two issues here: when you posed the question at first, it seemed like it was a personal query. That is, you referred to your interest in astronomy vs creationist theories, and your reading of an SDA magazine. And now you're suggesting that you want answers for a bunch of 10-11 year olds. But the answers you get for a personal question/discussion are going to be very different from answers you'd be offered to give a primary school aged class (albeit ones with upper high school aged IQs).

So what *do* you want? A discussion on answers that could be offered to kids in SRE, or a discussion for the age range of the list members?

For me, faith is
not a retreat into irrationality. I don't believe anything and everything, and
if I love the Lord with "... all my mind", the Book of Nature is going to have
to be heard alongside the Book of Scripture.

Agreed. And that's exactly why a fundamentalist concept of god doesn't hold water for me. Because it's inconsistent with too much of life.
