I never received an answer to this last message. However, I'm pleased
to say that I managed to update from s10u3 to s10u5, including my zones
with LU. But, doing this I had to trick LU, because it did not work
with zones as you know.

[1] I moved away the /etc/zones files to a safe place. This tricked
solaris into believing it has no zones.
[2] I created an ABE with lucreate -c old -n new /:c1d0s0:ufs
This worked perfectly! No errors!
[3] I dumped the "/zones" slice to a new slice (c1d0s4)
[4a] I mounted c1d0s0, moved the /etc/zones files back into place and
unmounted the slice.
[4b] I changed /etc/vfstab to reflect the new /zones slice c1d0s4 on
c1d0s0

** after all the new root should know its former zones, right?**

[5] I created a lofi mount for my s10u5 iso file (no dvd needed)
[6] I ran "luupdate -u -n new -s /mnt/cdrom

** The system upgraded perfectly, INCLUDING the (old) zones!**

So now, I had an old BE and a new one, but it hadn't been created by LU
for 100% => luactivate did not succeed. But that was not a problem. It
was easy enough to change the /boot/grub/menu.lst on the first bootable
harddrive to reflect the new ABE on c1d0s0 being available.

Choosing this ABE after an init 6 gave me an updated system (0508)
including upgraded zones. Everything worked flawlessly, except for LU.
Of course I immediately tried to make a third ABE from within s10u5.
Including my zones. After all, this is supposed to work, according to
SUN. Well, it did NOT. The same errors as before (u3).

** Conclusion: LU with zones sucks big time.**

Having found this little trick above gives me a little reassurance that
the next major update can be performed on my system too.
And that's what really counts. Not having to reinstall the zones.
Pppffft.
