Ok, so that was the other optional interpretation I had in mind
but I couldn't locate the bit "and then upgrade it to the version
currently on the machine".

>1) Get the bits from an old machine onto a new machine (flarcreate
>then lucreate or similar).
>2) Upgrade those bits on the new machine to bits that are compatible

Ok, something like:

        - make fs with old stuff
        - live upgrade old stuff to current bits
        - zonify the bits

>is "too hard" to install fresh into a new zone into that new zone.
>"Too hard" could be because the installation media was lost, everyone
>that knows anything about that application is gone (downsized,
>promoted + lobotomy, etc.), or there are just too many machines that
>need to be consolidated to do it in another manner.

I've done hard tricks by hand some times:
        - removing all files installed as part of the OS which hadn't been
          changed
        - look at changes and incorporate
        - take new file
        - merge into zone

So what you're basically looking as is something which "extracts the
essence" of an installed system and transplants it to another system?
