At risk of going slightly off topic just to agree with you... ;)
My opinion (and experience) is that systematic use of host names is a
level of sophistication - which is not to say it's rocket science -
that many network managers (of networks both large and small) never
achieve. Of course it can be argued on a case by case basis if that
"sophistication" is worth the effort required to maintaining such a
system. (Personally even to someone who's a word-hater I'd say
anything over 10 nodes could benefit from naming...is DNS that
hard? :-) )
On that basis I'd expect a LOT of networks to be all IP based. I'd
certainly make my tools cater to the host name crowd to the full
extent possible though. :-)
Thanks to all.

Actually, we dont name our routers and switches here. I find it
much easier to tell where something is based on its IP. The 3rd
octet tells me of the subnet, and the 4th tells me what the device
actually is. I'd imagine that you'd find both schools of thought.
Not quite sure what constitutes a "Large" network. We're a fairly
small college, only about 18 routers, 300 switches, and another 250+
wireless access points.
But for those who do use names, yes, it should definitely be an
option.

Feature Request: Display hostnames instead of IP addresses in the
exporters list. Most of us with large networks probably find it
easier to identify our routers and switches by name than by number.
