You can also use Assembler for doing anything PHP can do - and chances are high that this is faster than using PHP. If you don't see any benefit with PHP 5 it's fine, others do. If you disagree with the consensus the developers made feel free to support PHP 4 yourself once it's completely abandoned from us.
