The "standalone project" route would probably cause the fewest difficulties. 
There is no problem for me to make a project on my personal github account and 
contribute the code there. The main problem is advertising it to the calcite 
community, so that people who may benefit from it can find it.

Probably the biggest advantage of being part of Calcite is that the code 
reviews from the community experts would give the project legitimacy, enabling 
potential users to trust it.
