i did some tests, and it overall this patch is a net win. When the data is
very dense, it slows things down very slightly, eg 60.7ms vs 59.25ms for scans.
In a 1 column out of 100 scan, the performance improvement was big - 6.1ms
becomes 3.9ms with the new code.
