Ok, thanks. Is this option set in the 'make menuconfig' step?

4K-stacks is an option in the kernel when you compile it. I think it
also got backported to 2.4 so both 2.4 and 2.6 are "affected".

4KSTACK has nothing to do with Gentoo. Even more, I think Gentoo-users
are more likely not to be affected as with a regular
Gentoo-installation, you have to compile your kernel yourself.
Most users I've seen that have problems are Fedora users as the
default kernel in Fedora uses 4K-stacks.

So it really doesn't matter which distro you are running; as long as
your kernel isn't compiled with 4K-stacks (by distro or by yourself),
you'll not be affected by this.
Initially I tried the 0.3.2x drivers for my PVR-150 with 4K-stacks and
it paniced. Since I went back to 8K-stacks, the driver's been running
stable.

I see a lot of mention about '4KSTACK' problems using Gentoo. Is this a 2.6
kernel issue, or does it apply to the 2.4 kernel as well?

I have a Via Epia M10000 board, and wanted to use the unichrome driver for
native MPEG decoding. However, docs on it say it is hard to line up it's CVS
with 2 other projects that are moving targets also. Finding current versions
that all play nice sounds like a bit of a trial and error. I wanted to use
prebuilt RPMs that have worked for other people to be safe, as I'm not good
enough at that stuff to solve a conflict in a reasonable amount of time.
I'll wait for that, though, in order to get the 150 working. The cpu can
handle decoding one stream in memory for now. Next problem is finding free
time to work on it - the day job and kids are a handful :-) On Wed, 9 Feb

hmm.. what "modules" are you talking about? if its about ivtv, i just

I tried the linuxant kernels, but then apt/rpm didn't like the kernel name

workaround for that?

hey, I had no trouble in getting video working (no audio however) in
fedora. The problem which causes the hang-up while loading ivtv modules is
the 4k stack kernels which are defautly shipped/maintained by fedora. You
will need to disable the 4k stack option in the kernel and re-compile. or
just get the binaries from linuxant's website:
http://www.linuxant.com/driverloader/wlan/full/downloads-fc3-kernel-i686.php
They only have 32-bit (smp and non-smp versions available), but for 64-bit
support, you might have to look elsewhere or just recompile. -- R On Tue, 08

Jim, Being "stuck" with Fedora as well, I was wondering if you had some

Hi all, I've just recently aquired a 150 MCE card which I will be
installing shortly. However, before I do so, I'd like to ask this community
which Linux distro will most likely be a success with the 150 card in
conjunction with ivtv/mythtv? I was originally thinking of Mandrake (or
maybe Debian as Mythtv is developed under Debian) but I've seen a lot of
good folks here use Gentoo. If you all could share your experiences with me,
both positive and negative, I'd be much obliged. Feel free to mail me off
this list as well. I have had no trouble with both Fedora 2 and 3 as long as
you recompile the kernel without REGPARM, 4KSTACKS and pre-emption. -----
