The 4K stack option is 2.4 specific. The issue is for all kernels.

In the default and 2.4 mode you have about 6K of stack shared between 
interrupt handlers and kernel task context. The worst case for the IRQ
handlers is reckoned to be about 2K so you have about 4K left for apps.

The 4K stack option provides seperate IRQ stacks and while it doesn't change
the safe amount of stack to use it does mean that programs that use too much
stack that generally worked before now go boom.
