Haines,

   Your installed jdk/jre version is too old. The latest openJDK (at least on
Slackware) is 7u95_b00. That _might_ be acceptable to JabRef. However, the
openJDK devs have not yet adopted Java8 so I suggest that you go to Oracle's
web site and download their JDK/JRE version 8.

   I have jdk-8u72 installed and JabRef, Jgnash, and other Java applications
run just fine. Upgrade the runtime engine or development kit to version 8
and your issues will disappear.
