Rich, yes that did the trick.

The reason for the old problem remains an open question.

Also my question about how to bring up the entry editor from keyboard
rather than double mouse click.

I append a sad tale just for interest. Originally, about a month ago, I
decided to update to JabRef 3.1. Despite your point that its should not
run because my JRE was too old, 3.1 nevertheless did start. However, it
seriously damaged my databases, probably because the databases were seen
and saved as ASCII rather than UTF8. As the result all non-ASCII
characters ended up as garbage. I did the same damage to the prior
backup. I have an undamaged backup from a prior month, but it lacks a
lot of data added since. Even a merge won't help. So I must dedicate a
couple weeks to clean up the broken entries one by one. Very painful.
