Sorry, I just discovered that in version 3.2 C-e opens the editor for a selected file. What I miss, though, is shortcuts for opening a new entry. I used to be able to do C-A-a for new articles and C-A-b for book. In Options, Customize key bindings, I see that new article is now crtl-shift-A. However, the key combination C-Shift does not work for book, article, or in book. However C-n does open the list of entry types.
