You are right in the sense that one of the goals (challenges) of the 
device files is to provide a device independent interface for 
application programs (and libraries). So it might be a good idea to put 
aliases in the device files to support 'enhanced' modules (MSSP, CCP, 
etc.) as 'legacy' modules. I don't see a difference with the current 
implementation of similar aliases in a library.

I'll open an request for enhancement 'issue', and we'll see if we can 
all agree.
