Maybe you can see writing colors as selecting a pen, instead of constantly 
configuring your pen.
I'd prefer that one, too. And I would want to be able to write in e.g. red on 
black, so we would need a background and a foreground color. 
Oh, ok, if writing e.g. text does not change the background pixels, one color 
would be enough. But, e.g. overwriting existing text would be less convenient 
then as you would have to clear out the previous letters before writing the new 
ones. It's more flexilbe that way, though.
