And by the way, my exercise had a side effect.

    I've taken the sample 18f2450_serial_hw_int_cts.jal, modified the
    PIC of the include to 18f27j53, set the clock to 16 MHz and adapted
      config bits settings to what the 18f27j53 supports.
    It runs fine (at 115200 bps), both input and output are OK.

    I also tested with the internal oscillator at 4 and 8 MHz and with
    serial speeds of 2400 and 9600 bps: no problem!

At first I tried to use 115200 bps with the INTOSC at 8 or 4 MHz. But this gave an error message: baudrate deviation too large. The easy way out was to choose a lower baudrate. Later I found out that it was something with usart_common.jal: see issue #151. With a provisional change I can now use 115200 bps with low Fosc values.
