Interesting.  So basically, you are using James to build a custom e-mail
application.  Today it is mostly generating custom e-mail, and then later
you'll be processing the replies?  Are you actually using Velocity within a
mailet?

For v3, I am hoping to introduce BSF so that matchers and mailets can be
written in script languages.

Yes, I am running it at KPN to sent out personalised e-mails. At the moment
it is a 'send-and don't-care-about-what-comes-back' configuration but that
is going to change in the near future. I'm using Velocity as a template
engine to create the emails.
