In recent messages posted here I found several senteces not quite
correct or natural, and I'd like to make a little comment about them.

1. >Would I then say, "Watasi no chichi wa tosiyori desu"? Could I
say as well, "Chichi wa tosiyori-na hito desu"? (Since "tosiyori" is
a noun, I suppose it could be conjugated with "-na".)

"Watashi no chichi wa toshiyori desu" is OK, but the Japanese
usually don't say that, maybe because the word "toshiyori" sounds a
little bit degrading. Instead, they'd say something like "Watashi
no chichi wa mou kanari no toshi desu."

"Chichi wa toshiyori-na hito desu" is unnatural, and so is "Chichi
wa toshiyori no hito desu." "Toshiyori no hito" (some people also
say "toshiyori-na hito", but I woudln't and I don't recommend you
to, either) refers to older people in general, not a particular
person or persons.

2.>>> "Kyô tenki wa samui desu."

>> desu."

>Or "Kyou no tenki wa samui desu."

The above three sentences sound all unnatural. The word "tenki" is
used to describe the weather if it's good, bad, sunny, rainy, snowy,
windy, etc. If you want to say "It's cold/hot today", the correct
sentence is "Kyou wa samui/atsui desu."

3. >> "Kuroi inu ga aru uchi ni futoi neko ga arimasu."

Even if you change "aru" to "iru" ("Kuroi inu ga iru uchi ni futoi
neko ga imasu"), it's still not correct. You have to say "Kuroi inu
ga iru uchi ni futotta neko ga imasu." The adjective "futoi"
modifies only inanimate things, not people or animals (you can
say "futoi ude/ashi/kubi, etc" though).

4. > One I would like to
write down in Japanese is, "The house that you bought in 1968 does
not meet public housing standards nowadays. Thus, you may have to do
a few adjustments to it." (A man is speaking to someone who is about
10 years older than him, but is poor and does not hold any really
high rank in society.)

The sentence translates to "Anata ga 1968 nen ni katta ie wa ima no
kenchiku-kijun o mitashite imasen node, sukoshi hoshuu suru hitsuyou
ga aru kamoshiremasen."
