I have not tried Linux JVMs for the reason expressed, but because of a
small budget I have installed two x86 boxes running Solaris 2.6,
standard JDK 2 as available from JavaSoft, Apache + JServ and Oracle
JDBC.
These boxes are running an almost mission critical application (24 hours
per 5 days) and have been continously up since Feb. 27 when I last
upgraded Apache and an addidional disk was installed. The speed is not
comparable to that of a similar application running on a Sparc Ultra 10
with 512MRAM, but the customer had to decide speed vs. $$$
