Yes really, :)

The existance of Linux for PS2 doesn't really change anything
(at least with regard to making releases of PS2 games/software):

This is what Jeff Kesselman wrote about this (he is on the JSR
134 team):

First off it requires the PS2 hard drive add on, so it doesnt address
teh bulk of the PS2s out there and isnt really a practical masss market
distribution paltform.

Secondly, it eats a whoel lot of memory by the tiem you have Linux,
X and all up and running so agai nit isnt really practical for
serious game development.

Third, they only made a limited numerb fo them available and they
are already long sold out in Japan. There are rumros of a US
release eventually but no hard dates to my knwoledge.

In practice, Sony is **never** going to make it possible for
you to release a PS2 game without beign a liscensed PS2
developer. that woudl be shooting themselevs in the head,
not the foot. Remember that Sony **loses** money opn
PS2s, they make all their money from the per-unit license
fees for games that game developers pay back to Sony.

--- <quote end> ------------------

However, this doesn't rule out java and java3d for ps2. The
official PS2 compiler is a port of gcc and gcc has a Java front-end
although a primitive one. (almost java 1.1 compliant). Currently
no Java3D port exists for this platform; assuming the Linux
port of Java3D uses OpenGL (remember, PS2 does not
support OpenGL)

It is not clear (at least not publicly) at this time whether Java3D
will be part of the Java gaming profile.
