G'day,

we have built a simulation and training engine. It has a advanced non
domain specific simulation core. It's multiuser, using HLA which is the
U.S. military simulation networking protocol. Therefore we can interface
with military simulators, e.g. a F-16 simulator.

Our customers are usually the militaries of different western countries
and emergency personel.

One of the applications build on top of it is called Tactical Trainer,
it has a xml pluggable GUI more advanced (and smarter) than XUL. Don't
be fooled by the screenshots on our homepage, GUI (2D and 3D) content
creation is cool with this GUI.

For this application we have some scenarios mainly about emergency
situations, but they can be adapted to other domains fairly easy.

Even the 3D and HLA parts is pluggable modules. We did that because
maybe some day we may want to use something else instead of Java3D. And
it seems the time to do just that could be coming soon.

We have been using Java3D for 2.5 years, we will still be using Java3D
for some time to come, but of course that is not sustainable without it
being supported(mainly bugfixing since there are so many of them,
especially in sound). Beside from that we feel that Java3D is a very
good API.

We also agree to the posts stating that the DirectX support should be
dropped, it seems to be too much extra work for the developers with no
real benefits.

Should Java3D become open-source we will not have the resources to help
out much with developing it, but if it does and some guys are proving to
be capable of supporting it, we see no reason not to continue using it.

If we are forced to switch we will probably choose another scenegraph
API, like Open-Mind or Xith3D. Xith3D sound very game-oriented, which is
what we need. Again, it depends on public support.

Best regards
Nikolai
