Oak/Java was the result of another evolutionary step from other
languages, just as C#/Scala/Fan is today. The value Google saw in Java
was probably first and foremost the community of existing developers,
not the language by itself. I think most of us can agree that Java by
itself is largely inferior and unnecessarily complicated.

Sure, but that has nothing to do with Google being greedy as you
claimed. Google has an ad presence everywhere, incl. the mobile
segment which is slated to become bigger than everything else. Btw. I
get no ads when I fire up gmail on my Android, but if you get the free
version of some commercial app, the platform can show you ads - that
makes both the developer and consumer happy. If you count yourself
safe because you have an iPhone, realize that Apple just bought
Quattro to do the same thing on their platform.
