a) Java was much simpler than C++
b) Java benefited of the "web-effect" and related "news" aura
c) Sun paid big money for the marketing (JavaOne, Gosling, employees
exposed on their blogs, etc...)
d) the initial business model for JEE was good, as allowed big
competitors such as IBM to happily jump on the Java wagon and push
themselves for marketing
e) Sun's reputation was excellent in mid '90s and after the dot.com
bubble many people thought that they would have recovered. Later Sun's
name started to be counter-productive for the Java brand (often without
any rationale), but in the meantime Java had developed robust roots.
