Hi.
The trick I most generally use when I think I'm going through a screen reader lockup, in the case of any screen reader, is to get focus out of the application that it happened in. Usually I prefer just to press windows+m and then perhaps try to tab to the task bar or something like that. The theory is that if an application is locked up or hanging, it could be making JAWS hang too. Getting system foreground focus away from that application may bring the screen reader back to life. That isn't to say the screen reader won't start playing games again if you then try to bring that same application back to the foreground, but it's something to try.

Carolyn, try this, if you can get it going at all. Maneuver over to the start menu, make sure JAWS is highlighted. Then use the kill command (I think it's the equivalent of Win-JAWS-F4) to really clear it out. Then, go the desktop (remember, you should now be focused on the JAWS start command) and load it again.

I try the Insert F4 thing, then Alt Control J always before the guess at shutting down, but some of the time, that does not seem to work.

Kim, when Jaws goes silent, try one of two things:

1. Restart Jaws with Insert-WindowsKey+F4 (takes a little time)
2. Press WindowsKey+U; close the window that had opened, after Jaws begins
talking.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 16 frequently goes silent

Recently I began consistently using jaws 16 and I'm seeing some odd
behavior which I wonder if anyone can confirm.

During remote sessions using VPN, jaws 16 frequently goes absolutely
silent for minutes at a time. Occasionally speech will return if I
wait long enough, but often I have to reboot the computer before I am
able to regain speech.

This same behavior would sometimes occur with older versions of jaws
(prior to jaws 15), but then it seemed to be fixed.

I work from home several days a week, signed on to my desktop at work
and these frequent silences are very disruptive, not to mention the
reboots. Has anyone else seen this behavior with jaws 16? I intended
to report it to FS, but I'm not sure even how to explain it since it
seems to happen randomly without regard to what application I may be
using at the time.

Thanks,
Kim
