No matter which Windows version you are running, you can open Computer, This PC, or File Explorer, whatever it is called on your computer, and then open your C drive. Arrow down to Program Files, and press enter to open this. Now, arrow down or press the letter F to get you to Freedom Scientific, and press enter to open, then find JAWS. Open the JAWS folder, and then open the 16.0 folder. In the 16.0 folder, press the letter J, or you can press JFW one after the other, to take you to a file called JFw.ENU. Now, down arrow down one time to the file simply called JFW, if you arrow left, this file should be identified as an Application under the file type heading. Next, press the applications key on your keyboard to open the context menu, and arrow up or down to find the "Send To" item, and press enter on this. Arrow down one, two, or three times, depending on your computer, to find the item called "Desktop (create shortcut), and press enter on this. Lastly, close out of Computer by pressing Alt + F4. Now, go back to your desktop, and press the letter J until you find the JAWS 16.0 - shortcut. You can press F2 to rename this shortcut as you like. If you have a Startt menu on your computer, you can open this by pressing the Windows logo key, and arrowing down to the Freedom Scientific folder, open this, and find the JAWS 16.0 item. Once again, while focused on this, open the context menu and then Send To, and then Desktop (create shortcut) as another way of putting the icon on your desktop. Now, to create a hot key to open JAWS with, focus on the icon for JAWS 16 on the desktop, and press the applications key to open the context menu. Arrow up one time, and press enter on the properties item. You will open onto the shortcut tab, so tab down until you hear "Shortcut key:hot key, and it should say "None". Now, just type in the hot key that you want to use to open JAWS with, usually Alt + Control + J, then tab down to the apply button, then back around to the OK button to close out of the process. Now, you can try closing JAWS, and reopening it with your hot key. Yes, you can leave the old version on your desktop, but after you become familiar with JAWS 16, I would recommend that you uninstall the JAWS 13 from your computer. To set JAWS to start up automatically at start up, at the JAWS window, press the Alt + H key stroke, which will open the help menu. Now, arrow up or down to find the Start Up Wizard and press enter to open this. on the first screen of this wizard, tab down through the items and make your selections to set up JAWS as you like it. then press enter on the Next button at the bottom. On the second screen is where you will make the selections to have JAWS o2pen at start up. At the very top of this second screen, you will need to tab down through the selections to configure JAWS to start up as you want it to. the first item is to check the check box that tells JAWS to start up at the log on screen, thereby giving you speech during log in. Next is the setting for all users. If you want JAWS to start up after log on for all users, then check this box. If some sighted people use your computer, then you may want to leave this unchecked. Lastly, comes the setting for you, or "This User". This is a combo box, and you will want to set it to always so that when you sign in to the computer, JAWS knows to restart after you have signed in. Now, simply tab down down through the remaining items pressing enter on the Next buttons until you find the Finish button at the end of the wizard. Be sure to read all of the items as you do this and make any changes that you want, to make JAWS behave as you like. There are some changes between JAWS 13 and 16, and I am probably not the best person to tell you what they are, as I tend to forget what changed from one version to the other. But many improvements have been made over the last few versions. One thing that 16.0 introduced is the OCR function, which when invoked, will allow JAWS to read the text within a graphic for you. I do not use this feature very much, and honestly would have to go back and read how to start this process again. I suggest that you repost your last question again to give someone else the opportunity to help you with this one.
