<rant> <no-java> Bell Helicopter things the word "b-i-t-c-h" is sexist (well I *could* be talking about breeding dogs!!!) and censors my email message. Frankly I am not impressed. In fact, it's appalling, and free of all context. Language is *always* context-based. The admin who installed this or manager who forced him to do so (how's that for sexism; assuming the sysadm is male) should be ashamed of themselves.
I despise people and institutions who think that all language has to be 'cleaned up', sanitised, reduced to the lowest common denominator, derived of colour, forced into blandishment, turned into politico-speak. It's like you could publish the most horrific piece of racial hatred in the most sanitised language possible, and then object if an interlocutor calls you an "a-hole"!!! Or the way the military likes to avoid the words "kill" and "death". Direct language refuses to hide unpleasant realities. </no-java> If I was working for this company I would make special point to make sure every single variable in my code started with a "4-letter-word". Hmmmm.. and now that it occurs to me what the product of this company is and several of it's uses, I am reminded of a quote from 'Apocalypse Now'; "They train young men to drop fire on people, yet they won't let them paint '(f-word)' on their aeroplanes, because ... it's obscene!" </rant> regs scot.
