Tim, I can feel your pain.  I had the same feelings when I first started
Java programming.  The Java documentation from Sun is not that great
compared to other programming environments.  But, it is what it is and we've
all learned to use it.  Plus there are some real jewels of information
buried in the docs.  Also, once you've gained some experience, it provides
you with what you need to know and it's fairly easy to navigate.

The hardest part is trying to figure out what classes there are and when to
use them.  This will come from tutorials and experience.  The tutorials you
can find on the web.  Experience, well you just have to accept the pain and
suffering and move forward.  It's the only way.

I have been coding for not very long.

I downloaded the "manual" that I referred to in a previous email -- but it
wasn't quite what I was expecting. It is unzipped and contains hundreds or
perhaps thousands of files -- each which has to be double clicked on
separately to be able to access.

So the "manual" doesn't seem to be a very good resource to have gotten.
