The API "manual" you download is standard JavaDoc, so it should be easy to use or in any case, something you learn to use.
Sound to me as if you need some resources above and beyond the manual. May I suggest "Learning Java" by Niemeyer and Knudsen. Covers the basics and lots of other topics as well.
